SUMMARY:Finding Meaning After the Loss of an Only Child
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be able to offer this Alive Alone event to TCFV members.\nThe Loss of an Only Child leads one to question what purpose we now have in this world. While it is not possible to fill the void that such a loss creates\, for us it was vital to find some purpose strong enough that it will sustain oneself in moving forward. While we grieve together as parents\, finding purpose was an individual journey. Note: this event will be held via Zoom (when you register\, the zoom link will be included in the confirmation email you receive). \nPlease note: you need to be a member of TCFV to attend. If not yet a member\, please follow this link for more information. \n\n\n \n \n Finding Meaning After the Loss of an Only Child\n \n \n URLThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*Phone*In case we need to contact you.Email*\n \n So we can send the online meeting address to you.Are you a member of The Compassionate Friends Victoria?\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Thank you for your interest in the Online Art Therapy session. \nAt present\, they are only available to TCF members. \n If you'd like to know more please give us a call on 1300 064 068. Kyle died in a car accident late on June 3\, 2017\, at the age of 23. He was very active in the local car community\, and we were told wonderful stories of his caring nature. \nRoger recently retired from a 25-year career in radiation protection: “I draw from my experiences of being an inquisitive traveller to become a host and concierge at my Bed & Breakfast for guests\, and to care for them as my son cared for his family and friends. This is my chosen mission to honour Kyle.”\nDeb Moroney is a Nurse Practitioner working in Palliative Care at UT Medical Center in Knoxville\, TN. She has 35+ years of nursing experience\, mostly in cardiac critical care. As an NP in Palliative Care\, Deb provides compassionate care for patients and families as they move through the end stages of chronic illness. It was through Kyle’s guidance that Deb was able to find her way through the process of job searching and obtaining her current position at University of Tennessee Medical Center.\nRoger and Deb are both active in local and national bereaved parent organisations.

SUMMARY:Dia de los Muertos 2021 (Due to COVID restrictions this will be a Zoom event)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Originating in Mexico\, Día de los Muertos is a ritual dating back 3000 years. It is a two-day festival for family and friends to come together to honour and celebrate the lives of their loved ones who have passed away. Their belief is that at midnight on October 31\, the spirits of loved ones can come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared especially for them. \nOne of the biggest traditions of the festival is creating an offering of the favourite foods of their loved ones. The key purpose of this custom is a reminder of good memories and to show their loved ones that they are not forgotten. \nThis social evening viz Zoom is a chance for us to come together and share stories about our loved ones\, the stories that made us laugh\, the things that drove us crazy and everything in between. \nIt is a chance to celebrate the things that made each of them special\, with people who truly understand the joy in being able to talk about our children\, our brothers and sisters and our grandchildren. \nHave a photo that can be shared on screen. \nThink of a plate of food to talk about that is the one thing you think of when you think of your child’s\, sibling’s or grandchild’s favourite food. \nLast year\, we had such a variety of food including sushi\, lemon meringue tarts\, pizza\, chips\, cookies and cream ice-cream just to list a few! \nAll family and friends welcome![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Please register your attendance by completing the form below: a Zoom link will be sent to you before the event: [/vc_column_text]\n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Phone*Email*\n \n People Attending*Please let us know how many people you are registering to attend.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Bereavement Stress and Family Estrangement: Easing a Difficult Journey through Narrative Therapy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\n\nThe impact of bereavement can create such stress that it can lead to estrangement from family members and friends. This session explores a therapeutic approach called Narrative Therapy\, in particular its tools such as letter writing or “storying” an event. These tools can be especially healing when people have experienced estrangement\, and this session will demonstrate why. \n The Facilitator: Barbara Kessel is a Retired Family Therapist and Grief and Loss Counsellor. She is a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers. She has been a member of TCFV for twenty-nine years and is bereaved of three adult sons. \n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]\n \n PhoneThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*Phone*In case we need to contact you.Email*\n \n So we can send the online meeting address to you.Are you a member of The Compassionate Friends Victoria?\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Thank you for your interest in the Online Art Therapy session. \nAt present\, they are only available to TCF members. \n If you'd like to know more please give us a call on 1300 064 068. SUMMARY:Reviewing the Stages of Grief
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There is increasing recognition that our grief often moves in a non-linear fashion\, rather than moving through a clear and predictable set of stages. Even so\, theories—from the stages theories of Elizabeth Kubler Ross to the task theories of William Worden—can shed light on our experiences of bereavement. \nIn the first Topics Around Grief  discussion workshop for 2020\, we investigate these thought-provoking\, sometimes contentious\, bereavement ideas. The audience will also be encouraged to reflect upon and discuss which theories most reflect their own bereavement experiences. \nThe Facilitator: ANDREW WEATHERHEAD is the bereaved father of MAX and bereaved brother of CAROLINE. He served as TCFV President from 2015 to 2019\, has helped drive the organisation’s community education program\, and has facilitated a broad range of information sessions for TCFV. \nFeel welcome to arrive any time after 2pm to settle in\, have a coffee and chat. We will commence the session at 2:30pm sharp. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: Topics Around Grief sessions are different from TCFV support group meetings\, focussing on a particular topic\, rather than “where we are at in our grief”. If you are new to TCFV and the experience of discussing your grief\, we highly recommend you first attend group meetings for a period of time\, as Topics Around Grief sessions have a singular focus and cannot meet all needs. \nFor group meeting details\, please feel welcome to call us on 9888 4944 / 1300 064 068[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Register your place for this Topics Around Grief session by completing this form.[/vc_column_text]\n \n NameThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Phone*Number of people*Date\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Do Men & Women Grieve Differently?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It’s commonly believed that men and women grieve differently…and there is much we see to confirm this. What are some of these differences? Equally\, what are some of the similarities in how men and women grieve? \nAlso\, if we expect that men and women will grieve in different\, gendered ways\, are we inadvertently shaming people whose expression of grief falls outside a “gendered norm”? \nWhat’s your experience? SUMMARY:Finding Ways to Cope
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]‘There is no “one size fits all” in coping with grief.’  \nIn this workshop\, we will discuss the many varied strategies we have used in the years since our children’s\, siblings’ or grandchild’s deaths to cope with the enormity of their loss. What practical activities or insights have given us a renewed sense of purpose or consolation? \nThe outcome of this discussion will be to give back to ourselves and the wider TCFV community – particularly those in the early months and years following their bereavements – a range of additional ideas and strategies for coping with grief. From here\, we can pick-and-choose the ideas that we feel may be of greatest benefit to us.  \nThe facilitator of this session will be TCFV former president Andrew Weatherhead. SUMMARY:Dia de los Muertos
\nThis social evening at the centre is a chance for us to come together and share stories about our loved ones\, the stories that made us laugh\, the things that drove us crazy and everything in between. \nIt is a chance to celebrate the things that made each of them special\, with people who truly understand the joy in being able to talk about our children\, our brothers and sisters and our grandchildren. \nBring a photo that can be pinned up on a garland (not in a frame). \nBring a plate of food to share that is the one thing you think of when you think of your child’s\, sibling’s or grandchild’s favourite food. At last year’s event we had a quiche\, chips\, donuts\, pies\, cakes and even a roast! \nAll family and friends welcome![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Please register your attendance by completing the form below:[/vc_column_text]This registration form has expired. SUMMARY:Topics Around Grief: Finding Ways to Cope
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]‘There is no “one size fits all” in coping with grief.’ \nIn this workshop\, we will discuss the many varied strategies we have used in the years since our children’s and siblings’ deaths to cope with the enormity of their loss. What practical activities or insights have given us a renewed sense of purpose or consolation? \nThe outcome of this discussion will to give back to ourselves and the wider TCFV community – particularly those in the early months and years following their bereavements – a range of additional ideas and strategies for coping with grief. From here\, we can pick-and-choose the ideas that we feel may be of greatest benefit to us. \nThe facilitator of this session will be TCFV former president ANDREW WEATHERHEAD. \n(NOTE: This “Topics Around Grief” session falls on the fourth Saturday of the month. SUMMARY:The Changeable Nature of the Grief Experience: Explained Through Metaphor
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Grief has a random nature. It is not sequential or linear – it is highly individual. \nGrief can be likened to many things. Metaphors can be a good way to try to depict what the changing grief experience is like for each of us\, and so we will use metaphor in this session to gain further insight into our grief journeys. \nThis session will be facilitated by Su-Rose McIntyre\, counsellor and author of “The Grief Kaleidoscope: Metaphors for Grief” (Morning Star Publishing). \nPlease note: this is a 2.30pm sharp start.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Register your place for this Topics Around Grief session by completing this form.[/vc_column_text]\n \n CompanyThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Phone*Number of people*Date\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n[/vc_column][/vc_row]
